Abstract

Introduction: Acute myocardial infarction is the leading cause of death in many countries. Urgent and Emergency Nursing must respond to the care needs of the population and the changes that society has experienced. Objective: To present the nursing actions in patients with acute myocardial infarction treated in the Emergency Service of the Asdrúbal López Vázquez South Polyclinic, in the Guantánamo municipality, Cuba. Materials and methods: An intervention study was carried out from October 2014 to March 2015. The universe was 24 patients. Variables such as age group and sex, deaths, clinical presentation, causes of non-application of thrombolysis, general nursing measures applied, pharmacological treatment administered, nursing care and the most frequent nursing diagnoses were used. Results: A predominance of the male sex and the age groups of 55 years and over were observed; the deceased predominated after the age of 75. Precordial pain was the most common clinical form. General nursing measures were applied to all patients. Most of the cases did not receive thrombolytics; the most used drugs were vasodilators, followed by opioids. Thrombolyzed patients received nursing care for its correct administration. Conclusions: The work carried out by nursing staff in emergency services is of great importance in the timely and effective care of patients with acute myocardial infarction, hence the importance of maintaining their constant training and self-preparation.
