Self-collected vaginal swabs: innovative strategy for the detection of human papilloma virus in Belize

Abstract

 Introduction: Cervical carcinoma is a common cancer among Belizean women; for this reason, prevention strategies have been implemented through actions that include vaginal swabs with application of the self-collection technique for the detection of human papillomavirus. Objective: To illustrate results in the application of the self-collection vaginal swab technique for the detection of human papillomavirus at the Matron Roberts Polyclinic in Belize City. Methodology: Descriptive/prospective study from November 2022 to March 2023, in the female population between 25 and 65 years old, included in the vaginal swab strategy by self-collection, in the aforementioned institution. Variables were: number of women who performed the selftest, number of positive cases, level of information about human papillomavirus and cervical cancer, and level of satisfaction. Results: A low level of information about human papillomavirus and cervical cancer was observed. Positive tests for HPV types 16 and 18 predominated (34.7%), and 90.2% of women were very satisfied with the management and results of the procedure. Conclusions: Favorable results were found during the implementation of the strategy for the detection of human papillomavirus, with high levels of satisfaction related to the comfort and usefulness of the self-collection vaginal swab technique, as part of the prevention of cervical cancer in the population under study.
