Background: Children, especially those under five years of age, are more susceptible to developing complications related to pneumonia. They usually require hospitalization in the Intensive Care Units and invasive procedures for their treatment. Objective: To characterize patients with complicated pneumonia admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of the Pediatric Hospital of Camaguey, in 2023. Method: Observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study was carried out in 71 patients from 1 month to 18 years, 11 months and 29 days, with complicated pneumonia in the aforementioned institution during the year 2023. Results: The most frequent age group was 1 to 4 years, with 39 patients. There was a very similar proportion between both sexes. The majority were from rural origins (67.6%). 63.3% of the cases had an appropriate weight for their age (10-90p). In 53.5% the location of the pneumonia was in the right side. The most frequent complications were pleural effusion (44 patients) and sepsis (27 patients). The most frequently performed procedure was the insertion of a chest tube, in 34 cases. 10 patients required mechanical ventilation. 52.1% had a stay in Intensive Care between 4 and 7 days, and mortality was 5.6%. Conclusions: Morbidity due to complicated pneumonia predominated in the age group of 1 to 4 years, of both sexes. The most frequent complications were pleural effusion and sepsis. It was necessary to place a chest tube in almost half of the patients; most patients had a stay in the ICU between 4 and 7 days and low mortality.
