Abstract

Chronic kidney disease is a well-identified clinical entity, representing the final common pathway of multiple diseases with shared risk factors and with particular treatment. Objectives: To know the incidence and prevalence of chronic kidney disease at the Southern Regional Hospital of Belize, in the period from July to December 2018, determine the age and sex of the patients treated in this period, the associated chronic diseases, and identify the degree of renal function, specify the previous diagnosis of renal disease and detect toxic habits, if any. Methods: Our study universe consisted of 475 patients who received medical services in said Hospital. The sample was made up of 78 patients, treated for chronic kidney disease in the aforementioned period. Results: The prevalence of chronic kidney disease in our study was 16.4%. The male sex predominated, representing 61.5% of the sample; the age group predominant was those over 70 years old; 69.2% of patients admitted with chronic kidney disease had associated diabetes and 52.6% suffered from high blood pressure. Grade V was the one with the highest incidence (40 patients, 51.3%). 62 of the 78 patients with chronic kidney disease (79.5%) were diagnosed in grades IV or V. Regarding toxic habits, an incidence of 23.1% was found in the tobacco use. Conclusions It was shown that chronic kidney disease predominates at extreme ages of life, is more frequent in males and many risk factors coexist, prevailing high blood pressure, diabetes mellitus, heart disease, and smoking.
